Charleston’s premier tennis event earns top recognition for the second consecutive year.

Charleston, S.C. – We are thrilled to announce that the Credit One Charleston Open, the largest women’s-only tennis tournament in North America and a marquee event on the Hologic WTA Tour, has been named the ‘WTA 500 Tournament of the Year’ for the second consecutive year. This prestigious accolade, awarded by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and voted on by the players themselves, reflects the excellence of our tournament’s staff, the passion of our fans, and our unwavering dedication to the sport and its athletes.

This marks the second time our Charleston tennis tournament has received this esteemed honor, underscoring our commitment to delivering a world-class experience for both players and spectators.

As we look ahead to the 52nd Credit One Charleston Open next year, we’re excited to welcome some of the world’s top players to the newly renovated and modernized Credit One Stadium on Daniel Island. Among the early player commitments are World No. 5 Jessica Pegula, World No. 6 and defending champion Ons Jabeur, World No. 9 Maria Sakkari, along with past champions Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens.

“Receiving this award for the second year in a row is a testament to the relentless drive and commitment of the Credit One Charleston Open team to create an unparalleled experience for both fans and players,” said Steve Simon, WTA Chairman. “The tournament has set an aspirational standard, consistently going above and beyond to foster an environment where players can perform at their best. Charleston has rightfully earned its reputation as one of the premier events on the tour.”

The WTA’s “Tournament of the Year” awards are given across three categories, celebrating excellence at each level of WTA events. The 2023 honorees include:

  • WTA 1000: BNP Paribas Open (Indian Wells)
  • WTA 500: Credit One Charleston Open (Charleston)
  • WTA 250: Transylvania Open (Cluj-Napoca)

Bob Moran, Tournament Director of the Credit One Charleston Open and President of Beemok Sports & Entertainment, expressed his gratitude, saying, “We are deeply honored to receive this award once again. This recognition is a reflection of the high standards set by our owners, Ben and Kelly Navarro, and the tireless efforts of our entire team. After the success of our 2022 and 2023 tournaments, which introduced a new stadium and enhanced fan experiences, this award is a shared achievement with everyone who contributes to our event’s success – from players and fans to our corporate sponsors, volunteers, staff, and media partners.”

The nine-day Credit One Charleston Open features a singles draw of 48 players, a qualifying draw of 24 players, and a doubles draw of 16 teams, attracting over 90,000 attendees annually to Daniel Island.

Charleston Tennis, LLC, a Beemok Sports & Entertainment company, proudly manages Credit One Stadium under a lease from the City of Charleston. The venue recently underwent significant renovations to enhance the experience for patrons, performers, tennis players, and event organizers alike, further solidifying our ability to attract world-class talent to Daniel Island.

As we celebrate this honor, we remain committed to our legacy of excellence and innovation in women’s professional sports, building on the rich history of the Credit One Charleston Open, which has been a trailblazer in promoting equality and recognition for female athletes since its inception in 1973.
